Importance of Detoxification

Detoxification is a hot topic these days and for good reason. It involves removing toxins that accumulate in our bodies over time due to unhealthy diets, pollution, and other environmental factors. In theory, several of our organs are supposed to be able to clear toxins from our bodies. However, the concern that many health-conscious people have is whether or not our bodies can efficiently clear enough toxins due to the overload of toxins we are exposed to.

Detoxification is a vital step in maintaining overall health and wellness. By removing toxins from the body, it helps to keep the body free of harmful substances that can cause damage over time.

Detoxifying can also help the body process and absorb nutrients more efficiently, leading to improved energy levels, better digestive health, higher immunity, and reduced inflammation. Additionally, regular detoxification can help reduce stress and improve overall mental health. Ultimately, detoxifying the body is an essential part of living a healthy lifestyle.

Our children are especially susceptible to toxins that can accumulate in their small bodies. For instance, there are phytochemicals and plastics in our food, drinking and bathing water, and self-care products that have the strong potential to alter children’s hormones during their critical developmental period. Heavy metals are another potent toxin that can accumulate in children’s bodies and can affect every system in the body, including brain function.

Solutions to Help Children With These Modern-Day Toxins

  1. Diet always comes first when supporting the detox pathways. Providing our organs with the nutrients that they need goes a long way in supporting their detoxification efforts. Developing a whole-food diet plan that is animal-based and low in plant toxins is ideal. Focusing more on how ancestral people ate and prepared their food can be particularly helpful when figuring out what to eat.
  2. Supporting the detox pathways should be another major priority. An appropriately planned seasonal, whole-food diet supports the detox pathways. However, lots of movement, sunlight, and fresh air also support these detox pathways.
  3. Natural tools can help improve children’s ability to remove toxins from their bodies.  That’s the focus of this article.

Minerals are necessary to make energy as well as help your body make hormones and decrease anxiety and depression.

Check your chronic mineral status and heavy metal load (along with your family’s) with a test that analyzes these elements. Metals like mercury, lead, cadmium, aluminum, and arsenic that can harm our health in major ways are  checked in this test. Get your HTMA test today!

What Are the Detox Pathways?

The main organ systems that are involved in detoxification are the respiratory system, the skin, and the digestive system. However, there are two main detox organs: the liver and the kidneys. Supporting these two organs and the detox pathways is critical when it comes to detoxification.

The liver and kidneys do a lot of good and hard work to keep us healthy, however, in our modern-day world, they may need some extra support.

There are safe tools that we can use to support their detoxification efforts. The tools that we are going to cover in today’s article will hopefully go a long way in helping your whole family detox on a daily basis.

What Are the Modern-Day Toxins?

As humans, we’ve really done a number on our environment ever since the introduction of modern-day agriculture and technology.

As a result, many people struggle to remove toxins from their bodies because there are simply way more toxins in our environments than our bodies were ever intended to handle. Here are just a few modern-day toxins:

  • Environmental toxins (pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, EMFs, chemicals in our water, etc.)
  • Mercury amalgam (silver) tooth fillings
  • Processed sugar
  • Toxic seed & vegetable oils (canola oil, cottonseed oil, corn oil, soy oil, safflower oil, sunflower seed oil, etc.)
  • Artificial ingredients (i.e. man-made chemicals) in foods
  • Exhaust from vehicles
  • Exhaust from factories
  • Mining Pollution

Ancestral cultures did not have to deal with the wide variety of toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis which is most likely one reason why they were generally healthier than we are nowadays.

Our homes and offices are the number one source of toxins! According to research, most humans spend about 93% of their lives indoors. Within people’s homes, offices, and schools are a whole slew of toxic (mostly man-made) chemicals.

Modern Day Toxins That Affect Detoxification

How can we aid the detoxification process that naturally occurs in our bodies? For starters, we can naturally support our bodies with certain God-given, natural substances. Let’s go ahead and explore one of these options.

The #1 Priority: Balancing Minerals

Before considering helpful tools like castor oil packs, let’s touch on this very important topic.

First though, I have a question for you…

Do your children (or you) have any of the below issues?

  • Chronic skin rashes (eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, etc.)
  • Food or seasonal allergies
  • Sleep poorly
  • Struggle with ADHD or ADD
  • Inability to focus
  • Intense emotional outbursts
  • Deal with anxiety and/or depression
  • Get sick all too often

Did you know that all of these above issues may stem from a chronic mineral imbalance?!

Yes, absolutely!

As a nutritionist and mineral practitioner, I see these issues ALL too often.

The reason that those issues stem from mineral imbalances is because minerals must be balanced in order of us to detox, make the proper ratio of hormones, to create enzymes, to heal the gut, and to make neurotransmitters.

I order hair mineral tests for my clients and their children. The hair is an excellent tissue to use to measure mineral levels as well as heavy metals that have accumulated in the body.

Yes, we all have heavy metals…not just really ill people! It’s just a matter of how many we have, which ones, and whether or not our bodies have the tools they need to get rid of them properly.

Chronic mineral imbalances allow for heavy metals to take residence in our bodies. When minerals are well balanced, the minerals will KICK OUT toxins like heavy metals. It’s pretty wild but true. I see it all the time and that’s what the research shows.

To learn more, see my case study below…

A Case Study: Combining Mineral Balancing with Castor Oil

For clients who are dealing with mineral imbalances, castor oil packs are an excellent addition to help support their liver to gently and safely remove toxins.

This was the case for my young toddler client who dealt with regular seizures.

After an HTMA test, we uncovered that this child was dealing with a lot of mineral imbalances AND heavy metals.

It was heartbreaking to me (and his parents).

This young toddler was dealing with mercury, cadmium, lead, uranium, arsenic, aluminum, and bismuth.

His mineral imbalances along with these toxic heavy metals were wreaking havoc within his little body.

Castor oil liver packs supported his liver well while we worked on balancing his minerals – which, by the way – is a very gentle form of detox that I highly recommend before moving onto any sort of heavier detox method.

As mentioned above, certain minerals will actually kick out heavy metals that have the same chemical structure. The reason why this happens is that certain minerals and heavy metals will compete for the same cell receptor sites within the body. When we have enough of the right minerals, these minerals will push out the heavy metals that are in their place.

So, what happened to this client of mine?

Well, his seizures stopped. He became way more energetic (in a good way) and joyful!

The calcium we increased started to kick out the lead. The selenium and zinc started to kick out the mercury. The vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, and calcium started to kick out the aluminum. The zinc, vitamin C, and manganese started kicking out the cadmium.

His chronic hunger stopped. His body was able to become nourished with the nutrients that it desperately needed for so long.

To be very frank, it takes a while to balance minerals and detox heavy metals, so this boy’s journey is not over with yet. But he’s made INCREDIBLE strides!

Since we live in an overly toxic world, I highly recommend getting a hair mineral test (HTMA) for your children (and yourself) to check their minerals and heavy metals. I suggest using it as a great preventative tool if they are healthy. If they have any chronic issues then use it as a tool to see what may be going on in their body.

Be sure that you work with a real mineral practitioner – don’t just have the test done!

There’s an art to reading HTMAs and to actually balancing minerals due to all of the mineral interactions.

Okay, now let’s dive into the reason that you’re here. Keep reading to learn more about castor oil and why you may want to consider adding it to your child’s health regimen (along with mineral balancing).

Using Castor Oil for Detoxification

Whether or not your child has mineral imbalances or a high heavy metal load (see text above), castor oil is still an excellent natural remedy that can help your child’s body flush out harmful toxins. It supports the detoxification process in many ways since it has the ability to support various bodily systems that are involved in detoxification.

Castor oil packs have a long and rich history of medicinal use reaching back centuries.

The first recorded use of castor oil was by the ancient Egyptians. In ancient Egypt, castor oil was used for healing wounds, improving circulation, and treating skin conditions like eczema.

Traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine has also long used castor oil packs as part of its holistic approach to health and wellness, as well as for its anti-inflammatory, emetic, and purgative properties.

The therapeutic effects of the oil were known to the Greeks and Romans as well, who used it to treat a variety of conditions ranging from skin ailments to digestive issues.

As you can see, castor oil packs have a long and varied history of use for several conditions or ailments. Let’s take a look at more of the benefits.

Castor Oil Promotes Lymphatic Circulation

The lymphatic system is responsible for removing waste and toxins from our bodies. Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, which helps improve lymphatic circulation. Applying castor oil topically, particularly over the lymph nodes, can stimulate lymphatic flow and assist in the elimination of toxins. Regular massages with castor oil can also reduce inflammation, which is beneficial for detoxification.

Castor Oil Improves Digestive Health

The digestive system plays a crucial role in detoxification. When the digestive tract is not functioning correctly, toxins can build up in the body.

Castor oil helps with constipation and stimulates the muscles of the intestines. Consuming castor oil orally can also help improve nutrient absorption, which is useful for removing toxins from the body.

Castor Oil Boosts Immunity

A healthy immune system is essential for proper detoxification. Castor oil contains fatty acids that can fight off harmful bacteria and boost the immune system.

Applying castor oil topically can also promote healing and increase resistance to infections. By keeping the immune system running smoothly, you can improve detoxification and help your child maintain good health.

Castor Oil Lowers Inflammation

Inflammation is a common symptom of many chronic diseases and can have a severe impact on overall health. Castor oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can help alleviate inflammation in the body.

In fact, castor oil has been shown in animal studies to preserve glutathione. Glutathione is the “master antioxidant” in the body that helps to lower inflammation. It is so powerful that it has the ability to pull toxins out of the body. Consuming castor oil can reduce gut inflammation and improve gut health, leading to better detoxification and overall health.

Castor Oil Balances the Gut Microbiome

Castor oil is one of the only natural substances that has the ability to break down biofilm

Biofilm is a barrier that bad bacteria can build in the body in order to protect them from destruction. Biofilms are a significant source of stress to the body. However, research in periodontal medicine has shown that castor oil has the ability to destroy biofilms.

Castor Oil Removes Toxins

Castor oil has a unique property that enables it to bind with toxins and remove them from the body.

Applying castor oil topically can assist in removing toxins from the skin. Consuming castor oil orally can also help eliminate toxins from the liver, which is essential for overall detoxification.

Castor Oil The Ultimate Detoxifying Oil

Castor Oil Packs

One of my favorite ways to benefit from this incredible healing oil is by using castor oil packs. These special packs have been used for centuries as a natural remedy for various ailments, including digestive issues, joint pain, and skin problems.

It is believed that the therapeutic properties of castor oil come from its ricinoleic acid content, which has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.

In the early 1900s, a German physician named Friedrich Wilhelm Hildegard Prins began researching castor oil packs. He developed an at-home method of using castor oil packs for healing and even published a book on the subject. His technique involved soaking flannel cloths in castor oil, heating them, and then applying them to the body.

Since then, castor oil packs have become increasingly popular as an alternative therapy for various health conditions. Many people believe castor oil’s healing and anti-inflammatory properties can be beneficial for reducing pain, and inflammation, and improving overall health. With consistent use, they also have the ability to help support the body’s natural detoxification pathways.

How to Make a Castor Oil Pack

Using a castor oil pack is simple. Below are the basic materials and steps.

Materials:

  1. A piece of flannel cloth
  2. A bowl
  3. Cold-pressed and hexane-free castor oil

Directions:

  1. Place the cloth in the bowl
  2. Pour 1-2 TBSP over the cloth (enough to saturate it)
  3. Apply the cloth to your skin
  4. Wrap the flannel in plastic wrap or a garbage bag
  5. Apply some heat with a heating pad for about an hour
  6. When done, rinse off the excess oil with warm water

Castor oil packs are not recommended for pregnant women, people with kidney disease, or those taking certain medications. Always consult your doctor before using any alternative therapies to make sure it is safe and appropriate for you.

Pre-made Castor Oil Packs

Castor oil packs are extremely simple to make yourself. It’s also more affordable to make them yourself. However, they are extremely messy and many people find ways to avoid them after a while of making them themselves.

If you are on a tight budget then they may be the way to go for you. If you prefer, there are premade castor oil pack options though.

A company called The Queen of the Thrones makes a high-quality castor oil pack option. We’ve personally used these packs in our household for a few years now. They are much less messy than making your own. Plus, there’s no need to use a heat pack. Thanks to the way that they are designed and the materials that are used, your own body heat traps the heat that you naturally produce and heats the oil. This company even makes castor oil packs that fit children.

Can You Consume Castor Oil?

Ancient cultures used to orally consume castor oil. They would take a little bit of it to regularly clean out the bowels. In fact, some cultures still consume castor oil on a monthly basis for cleansing purposes.

Is Drinking Castor Oil Safe?

Castor oil has a strong laxative effect and can help when anyone in your family is constipated. However, be cautious in consuming castor oil due to its strong laxative effect.

Most people don’t take more than one teaspoon at one time. Children should consume even less, if any. Use your discretion.

In general, pregnant women need to avoid castor oil. Some pregnant women do consume castor oil to induce labor, but please speak with your health practitioner to see if it is right for you.

Castor Oil as a Regular Detox Aid

Castor oil packs are a great detoxification tool for your whole family. They can help to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, improve gut microbe health, and enhance liver function, which all contribute to improved overall health and wellbeing. When used regularly and as directed, they can provide great benefits in aiding the body’s natural detoxification processes. Additionally, using castor oil packs is relatively inexpensive and easy to do at home, making it a useful option for those looking to improve their health without investing in expensive treatments. Ultimately, castor oil packs are an effective way to take charge of your family’s health and contribute to your overall wellness. They are definitely one of my own family’s favorite health tools.
